English 원문
Kai had spent most of the afternoon moving benches inside the small community hall. Now, a bundle of paper lanterns slouched near the wall, each one a quiet responsibility left untouched since morning. Evening light pressed through high windows, painting stripes on the floor. The lanterns needed to cross the ceiling, yet the only ladder available had been repaired by several generations; one side had been tied with wire, and the top step had been replaced by a narrow plank. If Kai had known the plank would sway so freely, he would have looked for thicker timber first.
He balanced the ladder under the first ceiling beam, but the beam revealed its limitation: it stood just beyond the stretch of his arms. The lantern string slipped, brushing his cheek before sliding to the ground. A soft laugh drifted from the doorway; two elderly neighbors watched, hands full of cups. Without invitation, one cup was raised in salute, as if cheering a courageous circus act. Kai repositioned the ladder, slid a paint box under its legs, and called that small stack his personal initiative. The added height worked until a loose screw turned, and the plank tilted again, sending him down in an awkward hop.
Dust still floated when a current of evening wind pushed through the hall. Kai picked up the fallen lanterns, threaded the cord through a lower row of hooks, and accepted the ceiling’s unspoken obligation to hold whatever he could fasten. This slower path finally formed a zigzag of colors just above head level. Moments later, the main lights flickered and dimmed; electricity had been borrowed by a nearby concert. Murmurs scattered across the room, but Kai’s matches answered. One by one, candles inside the lanterns caught flame, their glow pooling over benches and worn floorboards. The hall rested beneath soft amber circles that swayed but held.
