A notice about new recycling technology hung on the board nearby, promising quicker sorting once items reached the truck. Reaching the doors, he tapped the button and watched stainless-steel panels reflect the tilted towers of equipment behind him.

The elevator opened only a hand’s width before stopping, then jerked back into place with a dull clang. Julian pressed again; the panel blinked red, signalling a fault. A second attempt produced the same clang. To lighten the load, he removed two monitors, stacking them against the wall, yet the mechanism still refused to move. The narrow corridor filled with chatter as other staff queued with boxes of worn keyboards. Blocking the passage would jam the queue, so Julian noticed the stairwell door; pulling the cart toward that shortcut felt like a small trick against the building’s stubborn machinery. A strip of sunlight lay across the first step, marking his new route.

He wrestled the cart downward, front wheels dipping uneasily on each step. Halfway to ground level a cardboard flap tore, and a rain of loose screws rattled along the treads. Their metallic clatter startled a flock of pigeons outside the window. Above the courtyard a plastic hawk, installed last month to deter them, hung from the gutter like a silent predator; the birds ignored it today. An autonomous delivery robot—shaped like a low white box—rolled under the arch below, then halted when the startled birds swooped near its sensors. The pause forced a courier behind it to stop as well, clearing extra space on the landing. Julian spotted an empty dolly resting beside the stalled robot, apparently left after an earlier correction to the delivery route. He shifted half the laptops onto the dolly and secured them with cord.

The lighter paired convoy—cart in one hand, dolly in the other—moved smoothly through the double doors into open air. Wheels rolled over brick paving while the delivery robot resumed its quiet glide behind him. Sunlight caught the brushed aluminium cases, turning them briefly silver before a passing cloud dimmed the glare. At the registration tent, volunteers waved, yet Julian steered his load into the designated drop zone and let the boxes slide onto a waiting wooden crate. A breeze lifted the loose flap he had taped back, then settled again. The crate rested against the oak bench, wheels silent.
