As Jorin entered the curved corridor, a hum followed each footstep; rubber flooring met hundreds of shoes at irregular rhythms. A storage hatch under the railing clicked open—maintenance mode, perhaps—and a ripple of cool air rose from below. The panels ahead continued sliding backward; Jorin ducked through the hatch before it could close. Metal rungs descended between coolant pipes, and light striped the ladder in subtle bands. He climbed down, boots echoing, and emerged beside a freight elevator seldom noticed by visitors.

The elevator doors yawned open after a short wait, revealing an empty cage large enough for crates. Jorin stepped inside, tapped the button marked "Roof," and the platform lurched upward with steady force. A minute later the cage halted, and a skylight unfolded overhead, presenting the laboratory courtyard he sought. Engineers hurried across the tiles, unaware of the detour beneath their feet.
