He had already studied how players interact with the claw of the nearby arcade game, believing a steady wrist would be enough. When his turn came, the metal claw closed too early, and the toy slipped away while dull music echoed through the cabinet.

Undeterred, he crossed toward a ring-toss game booth where glass bottles crowded together like green soldiers. A cool breeze let loose a swirl of confetti, blurring his sight for a moment, and two rings clattered off the necks. If he had aimed a bit higher, the second ring would have settled perfectly.
