Leah balanced a cardboard box against her chest while weaving through the Saturday market. She had promised to place her cookies on the community table before noon, and the clock behind the juice stall had already moved past eleven. Beyond the fruit stand, a low tent run by a local volunteer team waited. The scent of roasted corn mixed with sweet dough drifted along the lane, and a cheerful buzz rose from children chasing a paper kite. Leah imagined the oval treats sliding inside the box and gripped the lid tighter.

Rain began as a quick sprinkle, turning the stone path shiny. The crowd shifted, a shoulder nudged Leah, and her shoe skidded sideways. The box, which had been taped earlier, flipped open and flew from her hands. Something soft landed on her sleeve and let out a bright squeak. Wide eyes regarded her—a damp grey kitten blinked under the drizzle. Leah tucked the animal against her apron, then gathered scattered cookies. Each piece kept its generous swirl of icing, although crumbs dotted the ground. Neighbours noticed the mess and slid their plates aside without comment. A kind spirit seemed to drift around the tent as extra napkins appeared. Leah placed the rescued cookies on the fresh space, and the kitten curled beneath warm napkins.
