Dry paint peeled from the wooden gate that marked the hill path. Milo had planned a quiet visit to the lighthouse at dusk. He hoped to sketch the tower’s weathered walls. Grass pressed flat against old footprints showed that many boots have wandered there before him. No other person climbed the slope today. He stepped around rusted cans and cracked shells while the sea sent cool spray toward the cliffs. The air felt immersive; gull cries faded beneath the steady hum of wind. To maximize the fading light, he kept his pencils ready and checked his watch. The wide sky remained clear, but shadows already stretched across the stone steps.

Halfway up, a sudden clap echoed. An old shutter, loosened by years of salt, swung against the wall. The noise startled Milo; his pencil slid, and the page tore. At the same moment, foam reached the lowest step, warning that the tide was climbing faster than usual. He adjusted by moving higher onto a narrow balcony where lantern hooks had been fixed. While he searched for a new angle, an immense eagle glided from the cliff edge. It perched on the rusted rail beside him. Its wings threw speckled light over the cracked surface, revealing hidden colors beneath the peeling paint. Milo forgot the ruined page, began a fresh sketch, and the soft scratching of graphite joined the wind.
