Mark Beneath the Old Beam-

English 원문
Mark pushed open the garden shed, chasing a line of sun across the dusty floor. The shelves had been painted cream decades earlier, yet flaking strips now curled like dry leaves. A cracked jar revealed its content: dozens of tiny screws rusting together. Outside, a single chickadee hopped along the windowsill, its quick notes slipping through a broken pane. Thin air carried a scent of cut grass, while, above, dust motes seemed to dance around the drifting light. He had always planned to hang his grandmother’s wooden sign here; today, he aimed to finish the promise.
He placed a stool beneath a beam where the sign once hung. When he tried the first nail, the wood splintered, and the nail bent sideways. If he had remembered a pilot hole, the board might have accepted the nail at once. He returned to the workbench; the old hammer had been gripped by a rough leather strap, stiff from years of damp air. A small postcard lay beneath the tools, its idyllic river scene faded to pale blue. As he adjusted the leather, the stool rocked, causing the sign to float down and land on his boot.
After a sigh, he swapped the stool for a sturdier ladder rescued from the fence. The second nail went in, but the hook twisted free, scattering screws that rattled across the floor. Kneeling on the planks, he gathered them again, and the cold metal edges pressed against his fingertips. He tightened a fresh hook with pliers until the thread bit deep, and the fitting finally held firm. Lifting the sign, he aligned it with the beam; the ladder creaked yet stayed firm. Outside, the chickadee fluttered again, its small wings tapping the cracked glass twice before gliding away. Inside the shed, late sunlight tilted through the window, and the lifted dust finally settled around his boots. The wooden sign rested against the beam, steady in the quiet shed.
