The morning air smelled of damp grass, and warm light slid across empty metal seats. Tiny drops from a late sprinkler still clung to the chalk lines. Ben stepped onto the diamond; his shoulders were tight, and his eyes fixed on the red cap he had left beside the pitcher’s mound yesterday. Lila walked behind him and spoke in a grand voice, calling herself the narrator of their little adventure. The low mound that seemed to occupy the centre of everything looked steeper after the night rain, and dark clay stuck to Ben’s shoes.

A sudden shadow passed over the infield. A falcon glided above the scoreboard, wings held stiff. Ben paused, knees bent, while Lila crouched near the first-base bag. Wind rose, flipping a colourful flier off the bleachers. The paper tumbled across the grass, snapping and spinning. The bird swerved toward the moving sheet, then climbed sharply, startled by the bright flutter. Freed from the circling wings, Ben changed his plan; instead of marching straight up the slippery slope, he moved around the back of the mound where fresh gravel had been poured.

Gravel gave solid grip, and his shoes no longer slid. He reached the red cap, wiped away droplets, and tucked it under his belt. Behind him, the flier settled against the fence, and the falcon perched high on a pole, feathers smooth again. Lila’s voice fell quiet, and the field rested in plain morning light.

碎石提供紮實的抓地力，鞋底不再打滑。他撿起紅帽，抹掉水珠，把它塞進腰帶。身後，傳單靠在圍欄旁靜止，隼也停在燈柱頂，羽毛重新貼順。莉拉的聲音安靜下來，球場在單純的晨光中保持寧靜。
