English 원문
Milo pushed at the greenhouse door, and the swollen wooden frame refused to give. A second shove loosened the latch; glass rattled, and damp air rolled out. Sunlight angled through cracked panes, striping the floor with bright rectangles. Milo’s basket waited on his elbow, ready for tomatoes that hung like red lanterns along the vines. Near the entrance, an elderly tortoise paused mid-stride. Everyone in the household called her the matriarch of this place, for seasons kept stacking on her domed shell like quiet rings of history.
Milo began to wander between the raised beds. From his low perspective the tortoise watched bees dip among blue blossoms. Their flickering wings formed a beneficial collaboration with the petals, grainy pollen shifting from bloom to bloom. When Milo reached the tomato row, a soft creak overhead drew his gaze. The roof’s old irrigation rail—forgotten since winter—leaned askew. A coil of hose dangled, dusty and kinked. He stepped onto an overturned bucket for a more holistic look at the mechanism. The extra height showed a missing bolt; the rail perched on a single, trembling screw.
He climbed down, grabbed a metal watering can, and stretched upward to nudge the hose aside. The can felt heavier than expected. Curious, he tipped it, and metal gears clinked inside. A hidden panel shifted; the can was a disguised control weight. Its sudden movement jerked the loose rail. Rivets popped. With a sharp snap, sprinklers along the ceiling leapt to life. Cold water sheeted through the warm air, hammering leaves, tapping Milo’s shoulders, and startling the tortoise into a slow pivot under her shell.
The surprise spray turned soil to speckled chocolate, yet another consequence revealed itself: droplets slid along cracked glass, catching sunlight and sending moving prisms across every surface. Tomatoes gleamed brighter; bees retreated under broad leaves; the tortoise halted, then stretched her neck toward a fresh puddle. Milo laughed, then closed his mouth, letting sound give way to the rhythmic patter.
Water pooled, hoses sagged, and a shimmering curtain rested over vines, tools, and the quiet, unmoving shell of the old tortoise.
