English 원문
Carla pressed the metal gate open onto the rooftop garden just as the sky traded its late orange for indigo. She carried a narrow trowel and three tomato seedlings wrapped in damp paper. Over the day, city heat had pulled moisture from every pot, and the soil now showed pale cracks. Sprinkler pipes ticked in cooling metal, announcing the next water cycle. At the center table a woven fruit basket waited, brimful with peaches and plums left by earlier hands; sweet air drifted across the rows and mingled with the faint odor of potting mix. Timber rails around the beds wore peeling paint, flakes curling like tiny petals, and thin grooves marked where climbing beans had clung the previous summer. A swallow zig-zagged between bamboo poles, cutting through gnats that floated above lettuce heads. Carla knelt beside a vacant tub, pressed the blade in, and lifted a clod. Dry earth resisted, crumbling too fast, widening the hole more than intended; loose dust sprinkled her shoes. She steadied her grip, spooned soil back with slow scoops, and shaped a snug pocket. Behind her, footfalls crossed the planks: another gardener placed watering cans, checked a rusted thermometer wedged into compost, then faded down the stairwell, leaving the space again to evening sounds and the soft clicking pipes.
A dull thud broke the rhythm—the trowel handle struck a hidden stone and jerked from her grasp. Metal rang, bounced, and slipped under the tomato foliage. Carla leaned, fingers sweeping between stems; water timers clicked, and sudden mist burst from nozzles overhead. Spray cooled her neck while darkness thickened at the edges of every bed. She located the fallen tool and, with it, something delicate: a pale cocoon stuck to the wooden rail, rocking under the new breeze. Threads glimmered where moisture collected, and a faint rattle vibrated inside the shell. She cupped it carefully and set it beneath the broad leaf of a marigold, away from the coming flow, then weighted the stalk with a pebble so the leaf would not lift. Sprinklers arced in synchronized circles; droplets drummed on plastic tubs and rolled toward the drains. Carla returned to the open hole, eased each seedling inside, and pressed crumbly soil around green stems until they stood upright. Beside the last plant she slipped the stone that had foiled her earlier, burying it deeper so the root would grow straight. Mist settled, timers clicked off, and the roof relaxed into quiet broken only by distant traffic and a muffled train horn. High above, twinkling stars punctured the velvet sky; below, the untouched fruit basket waited for the next hungry volunteer. Water beads rested on the broad tomato leaves.
