Leo rolled up his sleeves, set a screwdriver down, and nodded toward a small box of spare parts. "If we finish before the water boils, breakfast gains a soundtrack," he said while lowering the magnifying glass.

Solder smoke curled, yet the first joint cracked as soon as Nora tapped it with tweezers. She had already cleaned the contacts, but residue still glistened like tiny mirrors along the copper lines. Several copper pads had been lifted by previous repairs, and their edges curled like dry leaves. Leo clipped a fresh battery against the rails, hoping to jumpstart the lazy circuit; nothing pulsed under the tester. The teapot whistled sharply, its lid jittering; steam fogged the workspace and dampened the still-warm solder.
