Warm stone pressed against their knees, and a distant mower hummed beneath the late-morning sun. Leo knelt on the clean courtyard tiles while Mia sorted bright chalk pieces. Both wanted to draw a picture that stretched from the fountain to the steps. The courtyard, which had been swept early, offered a smooth canvas. They have already outlined three trees and a wide river. A playful wind crossed the square and lifted loose chalk dust. Some lines were blown away before they settled. Mia straightened her back to take a break, rubbing chalk from her palms. Next to her, Leo closed his eyes to make a wish for calmer air.

They mixed water from a bottle with the soft powder, hoping for thicker color. The lunch bell had already rung twice, and footsteps echoed near the corridor. Pressure grew as shadow lines shortened across the tiles. Without warning, the automatic sprinklers clicked and sprayed cold arcs of water. Sharp drops hit their ankles, and both started to jump around the wet tiles. Water ran over the drawing, turning ordinary dust into bright streams of paint. To protect the center image, Leo rolled a bucket over it. Mia spread her arms, blocking stray jets. When the sprinklers finally stopped, deep blues and greens shone where pale strokes had been. The extra water really did make a difference; the river now glimmered like glass. Color dried under the sun while Leo and Mia watched, silent and speckled with dots of blue.
