Leo followed a chipmunk across the community garden, and Mira hurried behind him. The animal slipped through a gap beside a round metal hatch, and Mira’s glass marble rolled after it, disappearing underground. Warm water dripped from a leaking tap nearby, and the smell of wet clay mixed with cut grass. Both children crouched and gripped the hatch. The metal felt cold and heavy; their fingers slid on the rusty rim. At the same time, water from the tap flowed downhill, pushing against their ankles. They pulled hard, yet the lid refused to shift.

While catching his breath, Leo noticed tiny ripples where the water met the hatch. Each new trickle pressed under the edge, lifting it a hair. A thought sparked. He pushed the garden hose farther beneath the rim, and Mira turned the valve wider. Water surged into the dark space, building force against the lid’s weight. Suddenly the hatch tipped upward; muddy water burst out, racing across the path and carving a quirky zigzag channel. The unexpected rush washed soil away, exposing a ring of tiles marked with universal spiral grooves that seemed to stretch in an infinite pattern around the opening. Mira’s marble bobbed on the brown swirl, and she scooped it up before the flow thinned. The chipmunk reappeared on a stone, twitched once, and vanished between shrubs. Their matching handprints darkened the fresh mosaic. Side by side, the stains dried under the returning sunlight.
