English 원문

Sunlight angled through the cracked roof of the disused greenhouse, falling across a wooden cabinet whose paint had faded to almost nothing. Mika’s goal lay behind its cloudy glass: a brass compass he had once glimpsed during a school trip, a tool made for any wanderer who trusted the sky. He pulled at the handle, yet rust arrested the hinge before it moved a finger’s width. The glass pane had been scratched by years of wind-blown sand, and a soft shimmer traced those scars when the light shifted. Mika leaned closer; his gaze caught a darker line inside, as if something new waited beyond the dust.

He fetched a metal file from a nearby bench and ran it along the hinge. Flakes fell, but the door stayed still. If he had brought sturdier oil, the hinge would have turned earlier, he thought while wiping sweat on his sleeve. Next he slid the file under the frame and pushed; wood groaned, shifted, stopped. A restless breeze crossed the greenhouse, rattling empty pots and scattering dry leaves across the tiles, yet the cabinet remained closed. Mika stepped back, rolled his shoulders, and noticed a hairline crack near the lock. Using a flat chisel, he tapped around the crack until the latch gave way with a muted pop.

The door sagged open at last, releasing a breath of stale air. Inside rested not the compass but a small square mirror wrapped in thin cloth. Mika lifted the mirror; light bounced off its surface and darted across the ceiling. For a moment his eyebrows rose in recognition—the mirror’s frame matched a photo of his grandfather’s workshop he had studied for months. He turned the mirror over, hoping for an engraving, yet only more dust greeted him. A loose shelf beneath creaked downwards, revealing nothing else. Thin dust rested on the open shelf.
