Luka left his house after dinner.

He planned to watch moonlight over the small pond.

Autumn trees dropped thin leaves onto the path.

Cool night air touched Luka's cheeks.

A pale fog slid between the trunks and slowed his steps.

Near the water, he met a low wooden fence.

He climbed it, but a wet leaf made his boot slip.

His arm struck a fallen branch, and the branch hit a stump.

The stump shook; a round mushroom rolled off its top.

The tiny cap bounced, landed in the pond, and floated.

Ripples moved across the dark surface and pushed the fog aside.

Clear space opened above the water just long enough.

Soft silver light reached the pond and filled Luka's eyes.

He laughed, bent down, and watched the gentle circle of light.

A star winked overhead while he held the fence rail.

Luka turned, pocketed one bright leaf, and walked home.
