English 원문
Jora pushed the warped door of the mountain cabin and dust spun around her boots. The place had sat through three wet seasons; paint had flaked from beams, and a thin line of moss crawled along the hearth. Behind the cabin, sparse snow patches clung to grass that had once reached her knees. She had planned a hearty meal for the evening, something that might thaw stiff fingers after the climb, so her first glance went to the iron stove. Its round lid lay crooked, and a minimal layer of ash covered the grate, proof that no log had burned there for months. She set her pack down and began gathering split wood from the leaning shed.
Cold air rolled through the broken window, carrying a faint scent of pine resin. Outside, distant water tapped rock in an unhurried rhythm, and the wind rattled loose slates on the roof. When Jora struck the first match, the flame hissed out against damp bark. A second match produced more smoke than light; her shoulders lifted toward her ears as gray curls drifted into the room. The chimney had been blocked by birds during spring, and their fragile nest still wedged inside. She had climbed the roof once as a child, yet the stones now felt slick. Still, she edged up, pried the nest away, and watched soot swirl toward the sky before easing herself down. If the chimney had been clear earlier, the fire would have started with ease.
Back on the hearth, she stacked fresh shavings beneath thicker branches and breathed across the kindling until sparks caught. Soon a steady flame licked the pan, and broth began to tremble. When carrots and dry beans joined the liquid, a savory cloud drifted through beams, promising a piping hot stew before nightfall. While fetching salt from a box near the wall, a loose board tilted under her heel. She knelt, lifted it, and uncovered smooth, weathered bedrock only an arm’s length below the floorboards. A narrow crack in the stone held a rusted metal ring; water beads sat inside the gap, shining like tiny mirrors. Steam rested above the pot while orange coals glowed under the iron door.
