A low engine drone rolled through the roof beams, while footsteps echoed along the platform like hollow drums. Joy had spent the warm afternoon sketching in the park, and the sketchbook now rattled inside her bag with every hurried stride. Dryness tugged at her throat; even a single sip could quench your thirst when the air vibrated this loudly. She stopped beside a blue vending machine whose jingle had been recorded years ago and still chimed through tinny speakers. Cans of bubbly drinks glimmered behind the glass; crisp bubbles hissed inside them, or so the ad claimed. Dina followed, giving Joy an affectionate nudge that thumped softly against her sleeve before scanning the tracks for the arriving train.

Coins clinked down the slot, and a mechanical hum rose like a swarm of toy helicopters. Something knocked inside, then a metallic thunk stalled halfway. Through the clear window a lemon can sagged forward but refused to drop, rocking on its rim with a faint tin scrape. The platform speakers crackled: “Two minutes.” Air brakes from a passing freight carriage boomed beyond the wall, making the stuck can tremble but remain wedged. Joy slapped the side panel; the clap rang sharp, yet nothing else moved. Dina tried shaking the frame, producing only a dull wobble that merged with a distant luggage trolley’s rattle.

Joy scanned the floor until a thin plastic straw sleeve slid across the tiles, pushed by the draft of another departing train. She pinched the sleeve; a wooden stir-stick still hid inside, light but stiff. Sliding the stick through the delivery gap, she levered upward. The stir-stick creaked, the can lurched, and suddenly two objects clattered onto the tray: the bright drink and an old paper ticket that must have floated around inside the machine for months. The main doors of their train slid open with a muted rush, and behind Joy a pigeon pecked at the ticket that had landed beside her shoes.
