English 원문
A loose ribbon of crushed petals crossed the flagstones at the back of the garden. Mara crouched first, one finger sliding along the damp mark while Felix balanced on his heels beside her.
They traced the petal trail through rosemary bushes until a wicker fruitbasket appeared under a flowering quince, half hidden by leaves. A single pear rocked inside, hovering just above the weave because a tangle of stems propped it up. Mara brushed dirt away and paused to breathe in the bright scent that clung to the wicker; pollen floated around them like soft dust. Felix tipped the basket to free the pear, yet the base barely shifted, as though something heavier than fruit anchored it.
Both hands around the rim, he lifted again. Water oozed from the wicker and darkened the soil, but the basket still refused to rise. The resistance felt measurable—greater than a basket and one pear ought to weigh. Mara slipped her arm beneath, encountering a knot of wet cloth wedged between two slats. She tugged; the cloth held firm. Felix’s knee slipped on moss, so he steadied himself against the quince trunk and waited. After a heartbeat, he nodded once and kept pulling with her.
The cloth finally loosened, and the basket tilted. From the gap, three smooth stones rolled out, each wrapped in wilted lavender. They landed with soft thuds, leaving purple smears on the ground. Mara blinked; the petal trail no longer looked accidental. She unfolded one lavender bundle, revealing a tiny brass weight, the kind used with old kitchen scales. Felix turned another stone over; a second weight clinked free. The fruitbasket was not a snack carrier at all—it had served as a hiding place for forgotten measuring pieces, disguised under fruit and petals.
Felix arranged the newfound weights in a row, water shining on their stamped numbers, while Mara set the soaked cloth aside. A faint jasmine breath hung above the upturned fruitbasket.
