Late in the afternoon, Leo and Mara followed a narrow nature trail through fir trees. Pale sun still touched the trunks, yet moonlight already silvered the highest branches. Their goal lay on the other side of Stone Brook, where a small bridge would carry them to camp before darkness hid the water. A plastic flashlight swung from Leo’s wrist, giving a steady circle of white on the path. Batteries had powered it since breakfast; every minute the beam lost strength. When a tangle of fallen branches blocked the track, the light dimmed again, its edge showing a faint flicker across rough bark. The pair paused; straight ahead stood a wall of wood too high to step over.

Naturally worn ground curved left around the branches, safe but longer. To the right, a steep slope climbed past wet rocks and broken roots toward the bridge’s near end. The flashlight sputtered once more, its glow shorter and yellower than before, proving time was thinning. Mara crouched, pointed up the slope, and started climbing. Leo followed, pushing mud aside with both hands. Pebbles rolled under his boots, and his sleeve tore on a sharp twig; damp earth marked his knees. Halfway up, the shrinking beam revealed something unexpected—a flat stone tile pressed into the hillside, covered by faded fish that glimmered under fresh moonlight. They breathed clouds into the cold air, yet the river sounded closer now. Both scrambled over the final root and stepped onto the bridge just as the bulb went dark. Two muddy handprints clung to the first rail, water sliding under the boards below.
