English 원문
Eli has tried to cross the narrow canal since early morning. A wide plank, gray from years of rain, seems perfect for a bridge, yet it lies half-buried in mud. Cold air presses against his cheeks while weak sunlight flickers on the moving surface; the smell of wet leaves hangs close to the water. The plank has been trapped under two rocks, and a fast current pulls at its free end. Gravity pushes the wood downward; the current drags it sideways. Eli pulls with both hands, but the strength of the flow beats against him and the board does not rise. A thin solution of rainwater and soil swirls around his boots, colouring the ripples brown. Patience marks each slow breath he releases. For a moment, a quiet negotiation begins inside the wood: soaked fibres creak while trapped air pops along the grain. The hinge of the old lock on his backpack now carries the unwanted responsibility of holding a spare rope.
While rubbing warmth back into his fingers, Eli notices the current lifting the plank’s far edge whenever a larger wave passes. An idea forms: redirect the river against itself. He loops the rope around the plank, threads the other end through a low branch that reaches over the canal, and ties a quick knot. Water strikes the raised tip, pushing it upward; the branch forces the opposite end downward, levering one force against the other. The board jerks free, but the pull continues. Fibres snap; the knot slips; the entire plank swings, floats, and drifts away with surprising speed, bumping against reeds downstream. Rope fibres hang from the branch and drip steadily. The gap between the banks remains open, and muddy footprints darken the bank where he had stood.
