Leo slid the greenhouse door aside and guided a small plastic pump to the bench. Marta, who called herself a weekend engineer, balanced a coil of clear hose on her shoulder. The coil had been stored in a crate since spring. They had tested the pump twice this week, but today they wanted a longer flow that could circle the herb boxes. Warm, sweet air mixed with the sharp smell of damp soil and touched their arms. Leo fixed the hose to the outlet; an honest hiss told him the seal rubbed tight. Water, trapped inside the bent hose, trembled under sudden pressure. His thoughts stayed on the fragile seedlings nearby, yet the hose refused to straighten.

A kink sprang free, and a thin jet arced across the table, soaking a hanging fern. The fern shook hard; tiny ants tumbled from its fronds and scattered over Marta’s blueprint. She jumped back, and her elbow brushed a tray of mint cuttings. Leaves slid off and landed on the switch of a floor fan. The plug dragged across the tiles and met the socket; the fan whirred alive. Gusts swept the ants toward a pile of peat dust, and the dust rose in swirling grains. Marta pulled the main cord to stop the pump, while Leo planted a boot on the loose cable to block the fan’s wheels. Moist air clung to their sleeves, and prickly feelings of water and grit pressed against their skin. The jet slackened, yet droplets kept sliding along the bench’s edge. A single ant marched across the wet hose toward the bench.
