The sun had slipped well beyond its zenith, and golden lines crossed the garden wall. The ground has cooled since midday, yet pockets of warmth rose between stones. Warm earth carried the scent of damp bark while a faint squeak from a distant gate mixed with steady crickets. From a pile of leaves, a round hedgehog stretched four short legs and began an evening stroll toward the shallow dish that often held fresh water. The journey looked simple: cross the lawn, slide below the bench, and reach the dish before darkness thickened. A narrow gap that had been clear yesterday was now blocked by a twig, so the animal turned aside and let its paws wander through longer grass. Small seeds were scattered along the border, pricking against the soft belly.

The grass bent one way, yet a cool breeze blew in the contrary direction, sending loose leaves straight across the hedgehog’s nose and hiding the scent of water. Nose twitching, the creature climbed onto a low brick that edged the flowerbed; the height kept the grass below its spines. Halfway along, a forgotten roof tile rested like a narrow bridge. The hedgehog stepped onto the rough surface, and the tile tipped without warning, sliding forward with a soft scrape. Surprise opened a clear lane under the bench. The dish, which had been hidden, came into view. The hedgehog shuffled down, pressed its snout to the rim, and tiny ripples spread across the quiet water.

太陽早已越過正午，金色光線斜映在花園牆面。地面自中午起已變涼，但石縫間仍冒出零星暖意。溫熱的泥土帶著潮濕樹皮的氣味，遠處的門軸輕響與蟋蟀聲交織。落葉堆裡，一隻圓滾滾的刺蝟伸展四條短腿，開始黃昏的散步，目標是常放清水的淺碟。這段旅程看來簡單：穿過草坪、鑽過長椅下，再抵達水碟。昨日還暢通的窄縫被小樹枝堵住，牠只好繞道，讓前爪隨意在較長的草叢中摸索。花壇邊緣散落的細籽刺得腹部微微一縮。

草叢朝一邊傾倒，卻有涼風反向吹來，把落葉推過刺蝟的鼻尖，遮住水氣味。牠鼻尖顫動，爬上花壇邊緣的矮磚，高度剛好讓草尖低於刺背。走到一半，一片遺落的屋瓦像窄橋般橫放。刺蝟踏上粗糙瓦面，瓦片忽然傾斜，伴隨輕聲滑動，意外讓長椅下出現一條明亮通道。原本被遮住的水碟顯露。刺蝟慢慢滑下，將鼻尖貼向碟緣，靜水面上泛起細小漣漪。
