Cal rolled a squeaky cart along the low corridor and ducked beneath wooden stairs. The cellar under the community center held boxes of flyers and maps. Other helpful resources from yesterday’s information session filled bent crates. Dust curled from the stone floor while lines of yellow light slid through the ceiling grate. Warm air drifted from a metal pipe and met colder cellar air in small clouds. Beads of condensation grew, dropped, and spattered across pamphlets about an exercise class. Cal tapped the wet pages, then lifted a stack prepared for the leader and felt them soften. He needed space to work, so he guided the cart toward a bench beside the pipe.

A new drop hissed on the paper and left a round stain that spread fast. Cal scanned the clutter and noticed an empty tin tray once used for hot drinks. He lifted it, still warm from a forgotten kettle, and wedged it between pipe and bench. The tray formed a quick shield, blocking direct steam from the growing stacks. Vapor struck metal, sizzled, and ran down as thin rivulets that darkened the floor. While he sorted, the tray’s coating blistered and peeled like curled bark from a log. Steam warmed the cellar air, and his glasses fogged until he wiped them on a sleeve. Heat traveled through the metal, bending one corner and letting a narrow plume escape. Paint flakes gathered near his shoes, proof of the shield’s slow wear. Water still dripped softly somewhere in the shadows. Cal brushed the loose paint from his palms. He slid the last crate back under the bench.

又一滴水在紙上「嘶」地作響，留下擴散得很快的圓漬。卡爾掃視凌亂的物品，注意到一只曾用來端熱飲的空錫盤。他把錫盤拿起，仍帶著被遺忘水壺留下的溫度，並將它卡在管子與長凳之間做臨時防護。蒸氣撞上金屬、滋滋作響，再化作細細水流滑下，把地面染得更暗。他整理資料時，錫盤上的塗層起泡脫落，如同木皮翹起。蒸氣讓地窖空氣變暖，他的眼鏡起霧，只好用袖子擦拭。熱度沿金屬傳遞，使一角微彎，放出細細蒸氣柱。剝落的漆片散在他鞋旁，顯示這面盾的慢慢磨損。暗處仍不時傳來滴水聲。卡爾拍掉手心上的漆屑，把最後一箱資料推回長凳底下。
