Water on the Path- 適合初級的英語短篇故事

Pearl pushed a small wooden box into her backpack. She wanted to solve its sliding puzzle before dinner. She walked into the forest near her house with quick steps. Cool air moved between the tall trunks. A thin stream crossed the path and glimmered under ferns. She decided to climb the bank beside the stream. Her boot pressed a hidden catch on the box. A round peg sprang out and rolled toward the water.

The peg splashed into the stream and rushed downhill. Flowing water pushed it against a pile of dry leaves. The push of water against leaves looked like a small battle. The leaves broke free and drifted together downstream. They jammed a narrow gap between roots near the path. Water backed up, climbed the bank, and flooded the track. Mud slid over her shoes and joined the hurried stream. Pearl, fearless and quick, lifted a flat stone into place. The stone redirected the water toward an open hollow. Wet sand still trickled past her boots toward the hollow.
