English 원문
From the shadowed doorway, Nina watched a water vole scurry along the damp floor between vats. The small body paused near a trickle of pale pulp, nose trembling in the sour-sweet air. Not once did the vole look toward her, although the planks creaked under her boots. Steam drifted low, carrying resin and faint char that clung like the aftermath of a damp campfire. Sheets hung above, dripping slowly, while the thud of the stamper echoed against corrugated iron. Pale droplets landed on a rusted rail, bursting into tiny stars that vanished before reaching the drainage groove. A diverse mixture of brine, chalk, and sweet rot pressed against her senses, thick enough to taste.
When the vole vanished behind a stack of drying frames, she stepped closer, sleeves brushed by damp curtains of unfinished paper. Moist air gathered on her skin, and the floor offered little grip, its tiles slick with overflow from the vats. She reached for a bent squeegee, then withdrew; the rubber felt too slimy to trust. The alliance of water, fiber, and time shaped each sheet without haste, mirroring the slow shift in her posture. Near the presses, a versatile hook lay abandoned, its steel peppered with dried flakes that cracked in the warm draft. Somewhere farther back, old rags soured, adding vinegar to the already tangled bouquet. Hands still damp, she levered the hook under a curled board and coaxed up a wedge of gray pulp.
The fragment looked like ordinary scrap, yet a damp citrus smell clung to it, unlike any pulp she handled earlier. She knelt, pried it free, and held it near the skylight; light bled through swirling fibers, revealing seeds set in spirals. Only when she tilted the sheet did the pattern resemble river bends, a quiet sketch of possible liberation. A pause stretched; she brushed pulp from her palms onto the trough, eyes tracing those faint river curves again. Outside, a gust rattled the tin roof, and wet curtains stirred, scattering fresh smells of resin and iron through the loft. She folded the seed-speckled sheet, slipped it under her coat, and tapped the floorboard back into place. Nina slid the folded sheet between two warm drying boards.
