Only after a fat leaf began to yellow did Clara decide to take action. The air clung to their skin, and beads formed faster than they could wipe them away. Their improvised lever pried the frame, releasing a cool thread of outside air. Yet that relief carried a cost: the breeze shook a row of hanging ferns, scattering debris across Cruz’s fresh trays. Clara crouched near the fallen clutter. The page, no longer obscured, bore lines of tight handwriting softened by water stains.
