The handrail felt sticky with drying salt under Pearl’s palm. She walked along the pier where boards echoed under her shoes. A gray cat crouched by a coil of rope, tail twitching slowly. Warm tar softened in sunlight and mixed with a sharp seaweed smell. Beyond the mooring posts, a quiet clearing opened beside stacked crab pots. Several cork rings lay there, like small wheels dropped from a torn net. Dock hands repeated a legend about a restless explorer who once experimented here. Pearl lifted one ring; its smooth edge felt wonderful against her thumb.

She knelt and rolled the ring along a dry plank toward open space. It gained speed, then drifted left when a warped board altered the slope. The ring brushed the cat’s whiskers before spinning to a noisy stop. Amused, Pearl chose another ring and aimed a little farther right. This roll travelled longer, slid over a wet patch, and nudged the first ring. A faint unity showed as two rings paused together, edges almost touching. The cat sprang forward, missed both circles, and skidded across sticky tar. Pearl sent a third ring with more force toward the waiting gap. It bounced off a rusty bolt, jumped upward, and splashed into the harbor.

She gathered two new rings and shifted her weight for another try. A gentle release sent one circle arcing across the pair, slowing near them. She spun the last ring hard, watching it roll in a bright line. Friction caught it beside the others, forming a neat run of five wheels. Pearl slipped the empty mesh pouch into her pocket and rose. She placed the final ring at the line’s edge, marking her tiny course. A gull swooped low while the five rings gleamed on the wet timber.

她跪下，把圈子沿著乾燥的木板朝空地滾去。它先加速，卻因翹起的板面偏左，刷過貓的鬍鬚才停下。珍珠又挑一個圈，瞄得更靠右。這次滾得更遠，經過濕痕又頂到第一個圈，發出空洞聲。兩個圈子幾乎相貼，呈現微妙的整合。貓撲向目標卻撲空，滑過黏軟的瀝青。珍珠第三次用更大力道，圈子撞上鏽螺栓，彈起後噗通落海，驚起旁邊的一隻海鷗。

她又撿兩個新圈子，換了個站姿再試。一個輕輕放出的圈子劃弧經過前面那對，慢慢停下。最後一個被她大力旋出，亮亮地沿板面前進，最後也被摩擦力抓住，排成五個小輪的整齊隊伍。珍珠把空網袋塞進口袋裡並站起。她把最後那個圈子定位在隊伍邊緣，劃出自己的小路徑。一隻海鷗貼著水面掠過，五個圈子在濕木板上閃亮發光。
