Dry splinters pressed against the pads of a small squirrel’s forepaws as he squeezed onto the attic boards. Warm air pooled beneath the slanted roof, carrying a faint vanilla note from a scented candle stub lost among trunks. Thin beams of light slanted through the small window, catching motes that drifted like pale seeds. Boxes leaned in uneven piles; from one open corner a bright tin wheel, once part of an amusement park souvenir, rolled free and tapped against a beam. The squirrel nudged the wheel. It tipped, gained speed, then curved down a narrow groove and struck a thread spool. The collision sent the spool spinning toward the hatch, its path wobbling through dust. Creaking floorboards announced each impact with a dull drumbeat that echoed into the rooms below.

A second squirrel poked through torn cloth nearby, ears twitching at the racket. Together they explored the scatter. The first found a glass bead; the newcomer located a cork button. They placed the objects at the top of the groove and released them. The bead darted ahead, the cork lagged, friction gripping its sides. Next, they tried the tin wheel again, this time from a steeper plank; it bounced, startled a hidden cricket, and the insect sprang sideways, flipping the bead into a fresh trail. Every new launch changed the dusty drawing on the floor, curved lines carved by rolling edges. When sunlight shifted, both squirrels paused. They darted back toward the hatch, leaving twin paw prints around the bright curve of rolling beads. A loose shingle scraped against the roof above.
