"Tip the bucket," Joel called. Sand poured over the fountain's rim. Ruby steadied the lightweight wooden tray balanced between them, her supportive hand under one edge. The colored grains slipped in a thin stream, landing on the wet stone where water sprayed in short bursts. Last month the square has hosted a noisy fundraiser, and leftover packets of craft sand now lay open beside the basin. Joel wanted to press the bright powder into a spiral pattern along the rim, hoping the picture would last at least a few minutes. A plump quail, drawn by the new shimmer, hopped from the shadow of an alleyway and pecked curiously at loose specks. Above them, sunlight glanced off the falling jets, and fine mist cooled their hair and sleeves.

The first splash struck before Joel finished the curve, and the sand scattered into the basin with a soft hiss. He pinched a damp handful, pushed it against the stone, and watched the mound crumble again under the next spray. Timing, not force, blocked his progress. He waited, counting the rhythm of the water pumps: three breaths of silence, one burst. During the pause he folded his wrist lower, letting grains trickle in a narrow line that hugged the groove. The jet returned, but this time most grains clung, darkened by moisture. Ruby threaded a pinch of white salt between the red shapes, and the contrast flickered under the ripples. Behind them the quail flicked its wings, scattering chalk dust left from a street artist. Another burst arrived, loosening a corner of the design; pale sand slid toward the drain. Tiny beads kept dripping through the widened crack. The pale swirl spreads across the wet stone, growing outward.
