“Who stacked those crates so high?” Seth cupped one hand above his eyes. A deep rectangle of shade stood out among bright awnings, making the herbal stall beside it look dusk-lit although noon glare poured over the rest of the market. In that dim pocket, a silvery corner caught the light then vanished again. Seth, a young naturalist searching for dried cypress cones, stepped closer. Between two stone blocks lay a narrow niche, almost hidden, and inside it glimmered the face of a small iron vault. The lid sat ajar, yet nothing around it explained why it had been abandoned there.

Crowds pressed past, and each passer-by blocked the weak glow that helped him see. Twice he tried to squeeze his arm into the gap, but baskets of peppers shifted under his weight and closed the space. He dragged a broomstick from a cleaning bucket, wedged its end under the vault’s rim, and levered. The metal refused, only throwing a faint reflected gleam across the stall roof. He braced both knees, forced the stick lower, and at last the lid tipped forward. Dust moved like grey smoke through the sudden shaft of brightness that slipped between crates overhead.

Inside, he expected coins or at least paper records; instead, broken glass filled the box. The shards formed tiny prisms, and as sunlight slid over them a trembling spectrum climbed the wall beside him. Red edged into yellow, green chased blue, then the colors blurred whenever someone walked by and disturbed the angle of light. He set the broomstick aside; its handle rolled until a wicker tray stopped it. With nothing else to examine, he backed away from the niche and joined the moving shoppers. Colored bands drifted over the bricks long after his footsteps faded.

他原以為裡面會有錢幣或紙本記錄，結果只見滿盒碎玻璃。碎片像微型稜鏡，隨著陽光移動，一條顫抖的光譜攀上旁邊的牆。紅拖著黃，綠追著藍，只要有人經過擋住光角，色帶便立刻模糊。賽斯把掃帚柄放回地面，木柄一路滾到柳條托盤才停。他找不到其他線索，便退出凹槽，重新融入流動的買客。當他的腳步聲漸遠，彩色光帶依舊在磚牆上緩緩爬行。
