Rough wicker pressed into Blake's fingertips as he edged a shallow basket onto the stall counter. Strong morning glare flooded beneath the striped awning, drawing rectangles of brightness across piles of herbs. A brown dog slept beside the slatted fence that marked the lane, its body a muted silhouette against the sun-washed stone beyond. Blake had already rinsed his glass jars, and each one now held crystal clear water that caught every wandering beam and scattered reflected gleam over the wooden boards. Several woven mats had been stacked by dawn, yet moisture still clung to them from the humid night, leaving a faint shimmer whenever a passer-by blocked the light.

He lifted the last jar toward the brighter edge; the thin plank bowed beneath the weight. The jar slid forward, touched an iron ladle, and the ladle swung like a tiny pendulum. Metal struck a pyramid of citrus in full glare, and the fruit rolled from light into the strip of shadow near the basket. One sphere clipped the jar’s base; glass tipped, water burst out, and a quick trickle chased the travelling fruit. Every ripple flashed, then vanished as it crossed alternating bars of brightness and gloom. The surprised dog gave a single bark, then rose, ears outlined by the sun that poured through a gap in the canvas.

Blake lunged, but the wet boards offered little grip; his shoes slid along the dim plank. If the crate slipped, every remaining jar would tumble into the crowd. He shoved a heavy chopping block sideways; its weight pinned the basket’s corner and halted the rolling oranges. The water continued beneath the counter, yet a shallow groove redirected the stream under a bench, away from the fragrant spice sacks. He wiped the glimmering surface with a cloth, leaving dull streaks. Above the awning, a pigeon lifted from a sun-struck beam and glided over the square, wings slicing through alternating bands of glare and shade.

布雷克撲上前，但濕滑的木板讓鞋底打滑；若木箱滑動，其餘罐子都會衝進人群。他把沉重的切菜板橫推過去，板塊的重量壓住籃角，也擋住滾動的橙子。水仍沿櫃台下方流去，但一條淺溝把水導向長凳底，避開帶香料的紙袋。他用布抹去閃亮水痕，只留下一片暗淡。帳篷上方，一隻鴿子自被陽光炙亮的橫樑起飛，掠過廣場，雙翼切開明暗相間的空氣帶。
