English 원문
Someone had left a faint oily footprint beside table sixteen, the mark twisting like scaled leather on the cool tile. Sam paused, cloth still wet from polishing a glass, and pressed a finger into the smear. It slipped under his skin yet carried tiny grains, almost like salt. Another smudge stretched toward the bar counter, darker at the center, lighter at the rim. Between chair legs, breadcrumbs rasped under his shoes while chair backs brushed fabric against wood. The intricate stain kept flashing under the overhead lamp, turning dull brown into brief copper.
He moved along the dining area, fingertips grazing the smooth rail of the half wall, following each sticky print. Near the bar counter, a server and a cook brushed past, sleeves scraping as they sorted a quiet dispute over an order slip. Sam crouched. The trail bent toward the kitchen doorway then vanished behind a pile of serving trays. Lifting the top tray, he felt grease slide across his palm and weight drag at his wrist. The next mark showed faint ridges, almost like gills. His deduction arrived when he remembered today’s special was grouper; he straightened, then pushed through the swinging door.
Inside the prep space, steam drifted but the tiled strip beneath the counter stayed cold against his knees. The prints ended at a plastic bucket wedged under a stainless shelf. He tugged; the rim caught, then slipped free, revealing a narrow crack down one side. Thick marinade slid through the split, forming shallow pools that matched the earlier pattern. The revelation turned the mystery from missing food to leaking container. A silver fish tail etched on the bucket explained the grouper scent now coating his sleeves. Sam gripped a fresh pan, slid it beneath the drip, and was lifting the chilled metal tray.
