The freezer door stood wide, but a feathery curtain of cold mist hung inside. Jude guided a metal cart forward; its front wheel rattled across the tiled groove with a dry vibration. Grainy frost clung to the handle, numbing the pads of his fingers. He needed a jar of basil sauce, yet the nearest shelf displayed only bags of frozen peas. Above him, the ventilation unit hummed, sending a steady draught that deepened the haze curling around his shoes. Rows of faded safety stickers had been scraped from the cart’s bar, leaving a patchy strip across the metal.

Jude rolled toward the product aisles, and the front wheel locked again, forcing the cart to lurch sideways against his hip. If the axle stuck again, he would simply carry the jar by hand. A rubber sole brushed the floor beside him; Fern, carrying a basket, offered to pitch in with a nod. Together they felt along the smooth labels, searching for tomato red among the textured rows of glass and metal. Shelves ended abruptly where a cardboard turret of stacked soup cans blocked the corridor like a tiny castle. The tower’s outer canister slid when Jude tapped it, leaving a dented ring against the gritty floor.

Fern curved her arm around the turret, and both of them nudged it just enough to open a narrow gap. Hidden behind, the basil sauce waited, but every jar carried a smeared barcode where steam had warped the paper. They chose two jars; condensation made the glass slick, so their grip shifted several times before the load felt balanced. A thin stretch of plastic wrap still joined two lids, resisting until Fern twisted it away with a quiet peel. At self-checkout, the first jar refused to register, and the screen stayed blank although the scanner beam kept pulsing. He held the jar beneath the beam once more, fingertips aligned to keep the glossy label flat.

費恩環抱紙塔，兩人合力推開一道窄縫。後方羅勒醬靜靜等待，但每個條碼都因蒸氣而模糊。兩人各取一罐；玻璃因凝露而滑溜，手感多次調整才算穩固。兩蓋之間還牽著薄塑膠膜，費恩扭動手腕，膜才發出輕聲剝離。在自助結帳區，首罐怎樣都掃不進系統，螢幕依舊空白，掃描器的紅光不停閃。裘德再次把罐子舉到光線下，指尖對齊，力求把亮面標籤撫平。
