The front wheel of Lena’s shopping cart shuddered, then froze beside the cereal display, leaving a faint scratch across the blue-grey tile. Theo crouched at once, twisting the axle to learn what held it. The supermarket, their chosen venue for tomorrow’s campsite supplies, stretched under fluorescent light while early shoppers glided past. A folded store flyer lay on the cart’s child seat; earlier they had tried to map out a quick route between aisles, but the plan now stalled at step one. Lena peered toward the cold freezer line and noticed a slender strip of receipt paper coiled around the wheel like translucent ribbon.

She tugged the cart backward. The sudden jerk dislodged a corner of shelving; a row of meticulously stacked juice cartons had been placed there earlier by a quiet stocking robot, and the entire line leaned, touched, and toppled. Carton edges bumped a metal basket below, and a single tomato-soup tin broke free, rolling away with a hushed rattle. The tin picked up speed along the faint slope that neither of them had gauged before. It struck the freezer door, nudging it open by a finger’s width. Chill mist seeped out, and a plastic bag of frozen peas, stored upright on the highest rail, quivered, slid forward, and dropped toward the floor.

Theo lunged, swung his empty canvas bag outward, and the peas landed inside with a muffled thud, halting the chain before more packets followed. He pushed the freezer door closed again; its built-in temperature gauge still glowed a steady blue, untouched by the brief collision. Behind them, Lena lifted the fallen cartons into place and kept the leaning shelf steady with her shoulder until the last box slipped back into line. At the same moment, two aisles away, an employee guided a floor buffer around the bakery counter, unaware of the near-mishap in frozen foods. Across the tiled strip, the buffer’s circular pad hummed and glided in slow overlapping arcs.
