English 원문
"Blueberry jam, top shelf."
Cruz angled his chin toward a lone jar whose label reflected pale ceiling panels. Faye dragged their shopping cart closer, its front wheel wobbling across tiles, and stretched one arm upward. The glass felt slippery, and her elbow knocked a row of tins that rattled against a steel divider. A circular pattern of light flickered on the jam’s surface, radiant as morning frost on a window. She balanced on the cart’s lower rail for extra height, yet the wheel spun abruptly and rolled her shoes backward. The jar remained in place, shimmering above her reach, while nearby aisle numbers hung silent and unhelpful.
They steered toward the fresh produce area, hoping for a stepping stool among stacked crates. Between spinach misters and lettuce bins, Cruz spotted an overturned plastic crate left by a stock clerk. He rotated it and positioned it beneath the shelf, but its grating bent inward, refusing to stay level. While adjusting it, Faye happened to stumble upon a crack between tiles where a rogue basil stem had rooted. Under the constant fluorescence, the tiny leaves continued photosynthesis inside the supermarket, their color deeper than the tiles around them. The sight gave her another idea; she filled the crate with sealed milk cartons until it stood firm, then climbed again, shoulders squared against the chill air drifting from the freezer section.
The jar finally slid into her hands, yet the trip still faced one more snag at the self-checkout machines. The scanner ignored the smudged barcode, so Faye rotated the glass slowly, searching for a cleaner edge. During the turn, something tapped against the cart frame: a handcrafted clay trophy no larger than a walnut, wedged between packets of pasta. Its surface carried faint thumbprints and a stripe of silver glaze. She placed it beside the jam to keep it from rolling away, then tried the opposite side of the barcode. The reader’s red beam caught the numbers, and the machine recorded the price without sound. A thread of red light lingered on the trophy’s glaze, and a thin line of dust ringed the spot where it had lain inside the cart.
