Filtered sunlight poured through the canvas awning and glared across the plastic, making every berry blur into one hazy echo of red. She tilted the box toward the front display, trying to catch a clearer view under the stronger light near the peaches. Condensation slid back almost at once, drawing fine droplets that masked soft spots like a curtain closing. From the awning pole above, two sparrows darted past in a flurried quarrel, their quick wingbeats rattling nearby leaves.

The display had been rearranged by the vendor moments earlier, and Lars guarded a paper bag while she compared boxes. Xara wiped the lid with her sleeve, yet moisture returned like steam on glass, and the glare stayed. Lars lifted the first box when she nudged it toward him and balanced it across both palms. She shifted grip, angling the package so neighbour-stall sunlight slid along the plastic instead of straight through it. If Lars tilted the box too far, the berries would slide and bruise, so he held perfectly still beside the scale. Voices from the bread stall drifted through the canvas and bounced in a soft echo, mixing with the chain’s light clink.

A striped market cat landed on the counter, paws rocking the tray and casting a brief shadow across both boxes. The shadow softened the glare, letting Xara notice a dark stain pooling near the bitter end of the upper layer. She nudged Lars again, and he lifted the lid a finger’s width, letting vapor drift out in a pale ribbon. Fog thinned; bruised berries pressed against plastic like balloons ready to leak, so they set that box back on the moss-streaked crate. Sliding the other clamshell to the weighing station, Xara kept it under the cat’s shadow, where no new droplets formed. The chain hummed against the beam, a small resonance matching her slow breath while she judged berry colour again. She was sliding the chosen box toward the hanging pan, the cat’s tail flicking light back across the tray.
