Dry shavings rustled against plastic walls, and the quick squeak of a vole bounced between cages. Ada paused beside the display cage area, hearing the wheel’s thin whirr rise, stall, then start again like a tiny metal breath. Above the wheel, a heat lamp buzzed; its chain gave a soft sway each time someone walked past. Farther back, aquariums issued low pumps that folded into the constant rattle of bird seed dispensers. A pungent mix of hay and seed drifted under the warmer air, sharper near the food bin area. Every separate note overlapped, yet no single pitch explained the earlier bounce. Ada tilted her head, catching another brief patter beneath the shavings, then stillness.

A damp filter hum echoed along the aquarium aisle, and an answering bump thudded somewhere overhead. She tracked the rhythm past colorful nets toward the supply shelf section, where thin clear tubes linked one cage stack to another. A stuffed antelope toy lay on the counter; its stitched hooves brushed the laminate whenever the ventilation fan pulsed. The tubes quivered in those pulses, yet one segment remained silent. Ada reached up, but the quiet section sat higher than her shoulders, and the shelf edge pressed the tube tight enough to flatten it. The obstruction held like a muted drum. She dragged a step stool over; its metal frame rang once as it met the floor. When she climbed, the lamp’s chain clicked her elbow, and the tube shifted only a finger’s width—soundless, still trapped.

She had already pressed both palms around the stubborn bend when a faint scuttle answered from inside, followed by a second squeak that mirrored the first but carried farther. The stuck curve wasn’t empty; it formed an unnoticed interconnection, and something alive tried to pass through. Ada loosened her grip, then tipped the tube downward. Shavings hushed below as a hidden runner slid toward light, and she was reaching for the vibrating segment between the cages.

當她雙掌包住那段頑固彎管時，裡面忽然回以輕輕的爬動聲，隨後第二下吱鳴與先前極為相似，卻傳得更遠。那被卡住的彎曲並非空洞，而是被忽略的連通道，有生命正設法穿過。艾達放鬆手勁，將管子微微下傾。下方木屑安靜地分開，一個隱身的奔跑者朝光線滑來，而她正伸手去碰籠子間那段微顫的管子。
