"The water dish is tilting."

The metal rim quivered against the wire floor of the display cage area while Ada slipped her hand through the narrow door. She lifted the shallow bowl, its smooth underside damp and cool, hoping the shift might wake the tawny hamster that lay curled behind a plush wolverine toy. The animal stayed buried in wood shavings scented with crushed fennel, leaving the choice between it and a lively gray sibling unresolved.

Ada stepped toward the aquarium aisle to refill the bowl at a tank spout. A thin stream overflowed, ran down her wrist, and tapped onto the vinyl tiles. The water threaded along a slight groove, then flowed beneath a paper sack of powdered limestone stacked in the supply shelf section. Moisture soaked the sack’s base; the powder began to swell and solidify into a pale paste that glued itself to the floor. A shop ladder, already leaning on that sack, lost support and rolled an inch. The jolt shook an overhead tube where bubbles hissed through an aquarium filter, and a fresh splash leapt onto a row of plastic treat containers. Their lids loosened, releasing a tantalizing whiff that drifted back toward the cages.

Maeve behind the counter noticed the rolling ladder and slid a rubber mat across the spreading water. The mat absorbed the trickle, forcing the liquid to bend toward a floor drain and stopping the slow march of paste. Ada returned to the display cage area, bowl refilled and sides beading with moisture. The hamster finally stirred, nosed the plush wolverine, and blinked at the changed scent in the air. The dish that had been brimming minutes earlier was now only half-full, and a last clear drop slid over the rim, chased the wire, and fell toward the wood shavings below.

「水碟正在傾斜。」

金屬邊緣在鐵絲地板上微微顫動。艾達把手伸進展示籠的小門，抬起淺碟；碟底冰涼濕滑，她希望這個動作能喚醒躲在狼獾玩偶後的黃褐色倉鼠。動物仍縮在帶茴香香氣的木屑裡，讓她和活潑灰色同伴之間的抉擇依舊懸而未定。

艾達走向水族區，在魚缸噴嘴下重新注滿水碟。細流溢出，沿手腕滑下，滴在塑膠地板上。水循著微弱凹槽延伸，流到堆在用品架下的石灰岩粉紙袋底部。潮氣滲透紙袋，粉末膨脹，凝成蒼白漿體黏住地面。倚在紙袋上的店用梯失去支撐，滑動了一寸。震動搖晃了頭頂輸氣管，魚缸過濾器嘶嘶冒泡，又把水濺到一排塑膠零食盒，盒蓋鬆動，瀰漫出誘人芳香，飄回籠區。

櫃台後的梅芙注意到移動的梯子，把橡膠墊滑到蔓延的水前。墊子吸收水流，引導液體彎向地面排水口，阻止漿體繼續推進。艾達帶著注滿水的碟子回到展示籠；碟邊水珠閃亮，倉鼠終於動了動，嗅了嗅狼獾玩偶，對空氣中變化的氣味眨著眼。幾分鐘前還滿溢的水碟現在只剩半滿，最後一滴清水越過邊緣，沿鐵絲滑落，滴向下方的木屑。
