A plastic wheel whispered in the display cage area, its faint rhythm mixing with the warm grainy breath of wood shavings and dried corn. Near the bars, Amos drew in the briny smell drifting from the nearby aquarium aisle, while Hana caught a sugary hint coming from a surplus scoop of hamster treats on the counter. They had come to see two dwarf hamsters, yet one slept beneath a curl of straw, hidden except for a twitching ear. The other darted about, releasing a pepper-like musk each time its paws struck the flooring. Choosing felt impossible without seeing both animals awake.

Hana lifted a cardboard tube from the supply shelf section; glue on its edge gave off a sour paper odor. She slid the tube inside the cage, hoping the leafy aroma of crushed greenery inside would stir the sleeper. Instead, the lively hamster rushed in first, filling the tube and blocking the path. Amos pinched his nose at the sudden nut-shell pungency and tried another tactic: he sprinkled a thin line of sesame-scented pellets toward the tube’s mouth. Still, the hidden hamster refused to appear, and the wheel’s oily smell thickened as it kept turning.

A surprise arrived from above. A worker carried a handful of fresh timothy hay for a rabbit pen; its meadow-sweet fragrance drifted toward the cage. The sleeper’s nose quivered, then the tiny body emerged, revealing a pale stripe that the other lacked. The glass walls, despite tiny scratches, kept their integrity as both animals pressed against them, whiskers tasting the air. Hana compared the stripe to a ribbon at a school jubilee she had attended, and the urge to sneeze faded under the cool herbal scent. Decision made, the children thanked the worker and stepped back toward the wheel area. The wheel that had whispered briskly earlier now turned unevenly, and a single sunflower husk rattled against its slowing rim.
