The tanks along the aquarium aisle glowed blue, but the pane in front of Yves stayed dull with fog that blurred the sleeping hamster inside. He pressed his fingertips against the cool acrylic, and a round patch cleared under the warmth of his skin. Anticipating a glimpse, he scooped a handful of grain pellets from the feed jar and sprinkled them on the soft bedding mixed with dried juniper chips. Another hamster in the upper cage kept trying to harvest stray shavings, its cheeks swelling like tiny sacks. Ruby, who was comparing product labels at the supply shelf, glanced over yet made no sound; the shop’s quiet bargains of squeaks and wings continued above the steady bubble of filters.
A sudden clang from the counter broke the rhythm—an empty metal scoop had rolled off, nudged by the store cat’s tail. Yves stepped away to retrieve it before it rattled farther, and the handler near the interaction zone thanked him with a nod. During those few minutes, the bulb that had been hanging above the enclosure kept pouring heat onto the bottle nozzle. Condensed beads gathered, and one fat drop finally fell. It landed on the hamster wheel’s smooth rim; moisture spread, and the wheel turned just enough to squeak. Startled by the sound, the pup shifted under the shavings, pushing bits of juniper-scented bedding toward the glass.
Yves returned, noticed the cleared circle his palm had left and the single wet track below it. The wheel spun slowly, each rotation smearing the droplet into a faint ring that limited further motion—an accidental stop-loss that hushed the squeak. He lifted the wheel, wiped the rim with a tissue, then angled the lamp a finger’s width higher so new droplets would slide onto the bedding instead of the wheel. If he had arrived a minute later, the ring would have dried hard. The pane that had been fogged earlier now showed thin streams of condensation moving sideways toward the frame.
