English 원문
Most benches stayed dry under the metal awning, but a shallow puddle scattered light beneath the timetable screen. A sparrow pecked at crumbs inside the water, its chest feathers stuck together like damp felt. Faye balanced on grooved platform tiles while engine tremors ran up her shins. The hand-rail beside her scratched her palm; patches of paint flaked in patterns that resembled frostbite on old fruit. Near the sparrow she noticed a thumb-sized turtle wedged between the rubber edge strips. Its shell looked mossy, as if lifted straight from a distant wetland, and tiny grooves trapped grit that sparkled under the station lamps. Wheels screeched farther down the track, sending a brief shiver through the bench legs.
Passengers drifted toward the open doors, shoulders gliding past one another with the quiet rhythm of shared values about space and speed. Faye stayed back; the carved shape kept her attention. She crouched, fingertips pressing the springy rubber. The gap felt tighter than it looked, and her first try with a bent ticket slipped away. On the second attempt she pinched the dome itself. Cold ridges pressed into her skin; nothing twitched. A twist broke a rim of grime, and the shell rotated loose. Under the dirt the carving had been sanded smooth years ago, its lines still resilient after countless boots and rain. Grain patterns glowed where she rubbed them clean, and the creature changed from stranded life to forgotten bead.
She rolled the wooden turtle between thumb and finger, edges nudging her skin like a kindred spirit to every misplaced trinket that passed through stations. Door tones pulsed; the train she had waited for slid away, leaving a hush that lingered over the tracks. Faye set the bead on a bench slat, wiped away the last smear, and headed toward the footbridge for the next departure. A maintenance worker in a green vest lifted the freshly cleaned bench slat, examined the tiny figure, then pocketed the turtle.
