The handrail under Nadia’s palm was uncomfortably warm, although the corridor around her glowed in icy blue. She had planned to reach the sea-turtle feeding railing early and capture the first bite on her sketchpad. A duty-bound bubble wheel turned behind the glass, releasing silver beads that drifted upward like slow fireworks. Above, a fiberglass puffin claimed a permanent roost on the curved ceiling, its painted feathers catching the shifting light. The walkway had been marked in pale arrows offered as courtesy to keep visitors moving in an orderly loop. A school group burst from the jellyfish corridor, their bright backpacks jostling her elbows and blocking every forward step. She tried sliding sideways, but the narrow path refused room, so the crowd carried her past the tunnel exit. By the time the last backpack bobbed away, the announcement for feeding echoed ahead with two minutes remaining.
Nadia hurried to the railing, but condensation blurred the glass, turning the turtles into shadows circling blue distance. She raised one sleeve and wiped a circle; moisture smeared instead of clearing, and murky streaks replaced the view. If the surface stayed foggy, her page would remain blank despite arriving on time this morning. She paused, waiting for the quiet hum of the overhead vents to swell; a cooler draft often cleared the pane. While she watched, an acorn rolled across the concrete, nudged by a visitor’s shoe, and touched her sneaker. She scooped it up and used it as a simple weight, pinning the lower corner of her page against the rail. As the fresh airflow thinned the condensation, outlines of a turtle head and flapping flippers emerged, and her pencil raced. When the vents quieted again, she added the final curve, then placed the graphite pencil beside the damp bench plank.
