"Pass the water dish," Luna said.
Jude slid the shallow bowl across the counter in the display cage area, and a vinegary whiff rose where yesterday’s lettuce still clung to its rim. Damp cedar chips carried a woody tang around their ankles while two sleepy dwarf hamsters curled together, gently kneading the straw as if finishing a private breakfast ritual. Luna’s short gestures traced a circle around a grey hamster and then around a smaller cinnamon-coloured one; both were equally still. She hesitated, caught by the nut-sweet smell of fresh feed from the supply shelf section. Jude had earlier prepared a tiny choosing ceremony—two identical sunflower seeds on a lid—but the seeds lay untouched, so neither animal declared itself. He touched the glass and had to confess he could not see which pair of whiskers twitched first.
He poured a trickle of clean water into the bowl. The surface tension broke; a cool ribbon slipped over the lip, seeped through the wire floor, and found a narrow groove that ran toward the aquarium aisle. The run-off mixed with powdered turtle food stored beneath a tank, releasing a salty-fish aroma that spread like invisible steam. That briny mixture kept gliding, reached a torn corner of parrot seed, and turned it into a sticky paste that smelled yeasty, almost like dough beginning to rise. The unexpected current revealed a shallow tilt in the tiles; everything on the lower side started edging south, and a line of pungent liquid inched toward boxes of paper bedding stacked nearby.
Luna grabbed a packet of dry seaweed treats and pressed it against the flow. The fibrous sheet soaked up the broth and blocked the cascade before it touched the bedding. Above them, bubbles in a filter hummed steadily, and a pair of budgies shuffled on their perch, still hidden behind the glass divider. The two children eyed the hamsters again, undecided, while the faint, drifting scent of wet turtle food moved along the aisle toward the door.
