The floor texture pressed against his knuckles as he lifted the cup, surprised by the silky feel of the remaining foam inside. Behind him, a curator from the small station gallery balanced a wooden crate filled with glossy posters. The crate brushed Reed’s elbow, and the cup twisted. Brown drops splashed onto a metal molding that curved in a clean narrative arc from door to door, then slipped into a seam between seat bases.

Carriage movement tilted. The stray coffee now travelled along that hidden channel, following each jolt like water in a shallow stream. The departure board had been updated by an unseen operator earlier that morning, yet its glow dimmed when the doors blinked. Passengers glanced up, their coats brushing the polished poles. Reed noticed the flow darken the grooved surface, its path almost aesthetic against the otherwise grey flooring. He grabbed a stack of surplus timetables from a rack near the ticket validator and stuffed the edge of the paper into the seam. The paper swelled, yet the liquid squeezed around it and kept moving, showing every bump in the track.

In the final carriage section, a ventilation grate waited like a small drain. Reed tore one timetable sheet, rolled it tight, and wedged it across the groove. The train braked for Central Station; momentum pushed the coffee against the new barrier. Excess liquid pooled, lost speed, and dripped through the grate instead of the sensor path. An attendant’s cloth—thin, almost silky—wiped the residue near the wire, and the door lights steadied without a sound. Reed stepped aside as passengers prepared to leave. A thin ribbon of brown liquid still wandered beneath the timetable dam toward the grate, carrying tiny foam bubbles over the trembling metal.
