English 원문
Iron pots clinked together as a porter walked by, scattering short metallic echoes across the blue-grey paving stones. Above the noise, thin stall poles shivered; their silver canopies fluttered like small sails, letting stripes of pale light slip through. Hugo paused beside an herbal stand where the morning weighing ritual had left fine salt on a frost-white scale pan. He had come for a single emerald bead trapped inside a cracked glass box on the next table. Years of damp air had been absorbed by the wood, and the lid no longer lifted. He pressed once; the panel refused to move. A quill, left among scribbled receipts, caught his eye. He slid the feather’s spine under the seam, levering gently. The box creaked but stayed shut, and faint dust rose, coating his sleeve with a steel-grey film.
A sudden fracas burst two stalls away as porters argued over space. The scuffle jolted nearby tables; jars rattled, and Hugo’s target bead rolled from the crack, dropped through a gap in the planks, and vanished below the stall. Generosity from an earlier vendor had placed a shallow dish of water for sparrows under that very gap, and its spilled rim now left the boards slick. Hugo crouched, knees brushing the cool puddle, and peered into the shadowed underfloor. A dull glimmer winked back. He reached first with the quill, but its tip bent uselessly. He scanned the cluttered lane, found a narrow bamboo pole that had been tied around folded awnings, and worked the cord loose. Light shifted as clouds passed; reflections from metal buckets flashed across his hands while he guided the pole downward, aiming for the small green point. The stick touched something hard, slid off, and kept searching; Hugo stayed half-kneeling, one palm braced on the wet boards, the pole still edging toward the silent speck of color.
