Carrot Ribbon Between Two Shells-

English 원문
The hamster wheel spun in short rattles, but the row of parakeet cages beside it stayed still. Water pumps along the aquarium aisle kept giving soft "glug-glug" pulses that bounced off glass and net poles. Each watery throb marked a small temporal beat, timing every movement on the shop floor like a quiet drummer hidden somewhere behind the tanks. Over the layered chorus, the sharp "plink" of a metal food scoop occasionally joined in when an employee refilled seed trays.
Maeve stood near the display cage area where two tortoises shared a wooden shelter. She had brought a carrot from home and a narrow steel peeler rested inside her pocket. The tortoises were almost invisible; only a mound of wood shavings quivered now and then. First, she tapped the front panel with the flat side of the scoop. The plastic gave a hollow "tok," yet no shell appeared. Next, she lifted the lid a finger-width, letting the shop’s warmer air sweep inside, but the shavings only rustled, then fell quiet again. Several cages had been arranged in stepped rows, and the higher ones reflected the ceiling lamps, blurring her view. She pulled out the peeler, shaved a thin ribbon of carrot, and sprinkled dried thyme and rosemary across it. A tangy scent drifted upward while the carrot strip hit the floor with a gentle pat.
The surprise arrived from the opposite corner: a second, much smaller tortoise slid out from behind the heat stone first. Its claws made fast, light taps, beating against the glass like tiny drumsticks. The larger tortoise followed, but it stopped halfway, head raised, as if puzzled by the orange curl now resting between them. Maeve’s fingers tightened on the peeler; she had prepared one snack and now faced two curious diners. She stood motionless, listening while the pumps behind her kept their even under-water tremor.
