Morning light fell across a park lawn.

A sparrow landed near a dry circle of grass.

The bird wanted one crisp breadcrumb beyond the circle.

The ground looked safe, so it hopped forward.

Sprinklers burst and cold drops struck its feathers.

Water soaked the grass and formed thin streams around the snack.

The sparrow froze; wings lifted but the flow rushed past.

The spray stopped, and dry heat returned within seconds.

Small ridges assist the water, pulling the crumb closer.

The bird gave a quick stretch and studied the pattern.

Wet again, then dry again; the grass now glittered.

Two more cycles came and went in silence.

Dry pause returned, and the fearless sparrow found a twig.

It placed the stick right beside the waiting crumb.

When water sprayed again, streams pushed the crumb onto the twig.

The tiny raft slid toward the edge of the circle.

Spray stopped, leaving crumb and twig within easy reach.

The sparrow gripped the crisp prize and lifted away.

Water started once more behind it, soft and steady.
