English 원문
Every dawn, Suki climbed the spiral stairs to wind the old clock, yet this morning a damp warmth lingered beneath the stone treads. Moist air brushed her cheeks, as though the tower had exhaled overnight, and one tiny gnat looped lazily in the shaft of gauzy light beside her shoulder. She brushed it away, noticing a faint glimmer where brass met shadow, an exquisite bead of condensation trembling on the pendulum weight. Seldom had she felt the mechanism announce itself through temperature, yet the metal surface gave off a subdued heat that contradicted the usual dawn chill.
Higher in the chamber, the gears moved with measured dignity, each tooth wearing a silken sheen where generations of oil had worked between brass and steel. Hands chilled, she pressed two fingers against the main wheel; the surface lacked its normal bite, almost as if the night had carved out a sliver of friction. Nowhere along the rim could she find the expected crust of dust, and that absence joined the warmth and the gnat as another quiet irregularity. If the wheels were any slower, the bells would miss their promise to the town below, so she listened for the beat; the tick lagged by a breath.
Accumulated doubts coalesced when the pendulum stalled mid-arc, its bob pausing as though held by an ethereal hand. Without reaching for tools, she shifted her stance, leaned her shoulder against the frame, and pushed in time with the weight’s reluctant swing. The stubborn joint warmed under her steady pressure, and a hushed slide replaced the usual rasp, yet the pause returned after two more beats. Planting a knee against the floorboard, she altered her shove; the wheel rolled, releasing a breath like steam into the cool chamber.
The resumed rhythm climbed the tower, and far above, the hour hand realigned with a muted scrape that carried no triumphant ring, only restored movement. She remained crouched, noticing how the earlier warmth fled, leaving goose-bumps where her coat had parted; condensation retreated, turning the brass surface crystalline and brittle again. For a moment she considered tightening the regulator; her palm hovered, then withdrew, the faint delay now like space she had quietly carved out for herself. Outside, the minute hand began its cautious crawl across the pale dial.
