English 원문
Vera swung the viewing binoculars toward the sloth enclosure and then hurried along the honey-colored pathway that curved under patchy shade. She had studied the zoo map earlier and aimed to catch the sloth before the penguin feeding show began, yet only an empty hammock hung inside the exhibit. The wide mesh boundary glimmered like copper thread; no movement came from the shaded shelter behind it. Vera stepped onto a small observation deck, but the angle merely showed the hammock’s quiet fabric. Gravel shifted under her shoes as a boy named Emil appeared, swapping a camera strap from one shoulder to the other. He pointed at the silent shelter, shrugged, and stayed beside her.
Emil chose to take the initiative; he guessed the sloth might climb higher if the visitors changed position, so he led Vera toward a narrow veranda attached to the reptile house that overlooked the rear of the same habitat. Halfway there, a rope barrier blocked the shortcut because staff were cleaning cages, and warm rinse water trickled across the tiles. They circled back, losing minutes. At the veranda rail, golden afternoon light spilled through climbing vines, and the hammock had been fixed between two sturdy beams now visible from the side. Sudden raucous calls burst nearby as a proud peacock strutted across the path, its feathers catching amber flashes. Startled by the sound, the sloth lifted its head, then hauled its body into the hammock with deliberate grace. Emil steadied the binoculars; Vera leaned close, counting the creature’s slow breaths. She then slipped the binoculars into the hands of a younger child waiting behind them, a small way to pay it forward before hurrying toward the distant penguin pool. At the same hour, down at that pool, a keeper dropped a silver bucket, fish scattered like sparks, and water slapped against the timber edge as startled gulls wheeled above the shining surface.
