A tin pail of smooth river stones sat beside the shrinking puddle, while Holly crouched nearby, rolling one between her fingers. Zander arrived with a sketchbook, raising his eyebrows at her quiet company under the wide branch shadow. He had hoped to capture the delicate mineral lace forming along the sunlit rim before it vanished completely. Settling on a warm flagstone, he leaned forward, pencil poised, noticing how the puddle centre still held perfect clarity. His own shadow crept over the rim, cooling the stone; the shining line stalled, and the pattern refused to sharpen. He waited through ten calm breaths, but nothing shifted, so the first sketch remained a blur of quick strokes.

Minutes later, the sun inched higher and cast a new stripe of his shoulder's shadow across the rim. Zander tried again from the same place, refusing to move his seat despite the creeping darkness over the pattern. He adjusted only his elbow angle, lowering it slightly so the pencil hovered closer to the stone. This micro-shift let more light strike the evaporation rim, and fragile branches of white sediment began to transform before his eyes. The mineral lines had been etched by retreating water, and fresh grooves quietly spread between the older paths. A sudden footstep slapped the far side; a passer-by, unseen until then, stamped a dark footprint through the forming pattern. There was serendipity in the footprint's timing; the ripple erased some lines yet revealed curved ridges like tiny mountain ranges. The second drawing captured both the footprint swirls and the faint haze rising where warm stone met the thinning water.

By evening, the courtyard lay empty; sketch papers had been gathered, yet the pail of stones stayed beside the flagstone. The puddle had vanished, leaving pale mineral fans that met the single footprint, now powder-dry against darker surrounding stone. Lamp light grazed those shapes, and a gentle breeze shifted a loose leaf across them without a sound.
